October 2024 - Shellie Johnson
Congratulations to Shellie Johnson, our October Fitness Patron of the Month!
Thank you for asking me to tell my story. I am honored. I began yoga about 10 years ago, in a very basic beginner’s class. I am not athletic, nor have I ever been involved in sports. I wanted low impact, not to put added stress on my joints, and still strengthening. I knew that my future me would be grateful for wanting to improve my physical fitness. My belief is that how we treat our bodies will affect our quality of life. Being able to touch my toes was a goal. It didn’t take long, and I was hooked on yoga. Yoga is for every body type and any fitness level. Standing on your head is not required, unless it’s something you want to try…I do not! It can be as challenging as you want it to be. I have built great balance and stamina, along with strength and flexibility. Along the way I have met some incredible people, my yogi family. I don’t always remember your name, but I do remember your smile. I have been blessed with some great instructors that have shared and guided me through the years. I will always be grateful to these amazing people. My improved flexibility has helped my golf game and the increase in my stamina and endurance helps me with paddle boarding, bike riding and everyday activities. I try to attend classes up to 5 classes a week. In yoga, there is a class for everyone, and when you are ready, you try more. Some days are easier than others. The hardest part can be getting on your mat when you’re feeling lazy or walking into a class for the first time. There has never been a time when I wasn’t glad, I showed up.
When Bogafit came to Carbon Valley, I was intrigued, even though I don’t swim. I have been doing the class for over 2 years. Very challenging and rewarding and I wouldn’t miss a class. Yoga and Pilates on a paddle board in the swimming pool! How much fun is that? While building core strength and increasing balance and telling yourself…I got this! It’s only water, I will survive! It is definitely a sense of accomplishment when class is over, knowing you’ve done your best and your body appreciates it. Working out should be fun, challenging and a part of our daily lives.
