Youth Programs


Are you ready to find your inner Picasso? Participants are guided through easy step-by-step instructions to paint a canvas. Each class features a new and different piece of original artwork that is simple to create and fun to show off to family and friends. All art supplies are included and no art experience needed.

Weekly themed activities will get your kids up and moving during spring and summer breaks. Participants spend time doing arts and crafts, organized physical activities in the gymnasium, open swim in the pool, and a daily field trip. Please bring a sack lunch and water bottle as well as a swimsuit and towel if needed. Visit the youth programs page at for trip details.  Fee: $120 D, $130 ND per session

Our Junior Trainers program teaches children how to use weight and cardio room equipment, proper weight room etiquette, and basic human anatomy. Participation in class is required for access to weight and cardio rooms with adult supervision.

Classes concentrate on karate punching, kicking, and blocking basics. Students learn to count from 1 to 10 in Japanese and learn basic Japanese phrases used in the dojo.  Have fun doing drills geared toward coordination and exercise in a structured and disciplined environment.  This program has its own ranking system and its purpose is to prepare younger students for the karate class.

Uechi  Ryu Karate Do is a karate style of the Uechi family in Okinawa, Japan. It is derived from Pangainoon Kung Fu developed in Southern China pertaining to the three animal systems; Dragon, Tiger, and Crane. This is a structured class promoting self-defense, coordination, balance, and self-control for all ages and skill levels. Age: 7 and up

Additional costs/Information Karate equipment is bought through the instructor, not through the Carbon  Valley Recreation Center. Testing is held at Bennett’s Karate school in Erie.

Belt testing and class cancellations due to recreation center closures will be made up at Bennett's Karate dojo in Erie.
